The evening that we first become aware that the house martins have returned each spring brings joy to the heart. If we are lucky and the weather is warm enough to eat supper outside during the summer months, we are entertained with aerial acrobatics as the house martins and swifts compete for insects in the setting sun. There is a brief respite before they are replaced by bats.
